The Wind River Mountains are famous for hiking and high mountain lake fishing.   The
“Winds” are home to more than 1,600 lakes and over 1,000 of these lakes are filled
with fish.  The "Winds" also support more than 500 miles of wilderness trails. This 90
mile long mountain range holds 27 active glaciers and is home to the tallest peak in
the state (Gannett Peak) at 13,804 ft. Two wilderness areas surround the "Winds".
They are the Bridger and Popo Agie Wilderness.

The cutthroat is the trout native to the "Winds" but thanks to early explorers packing
fingerlings in using milk cans on pack animals many of the lakes today thrive with
Goldens, Brookies, and Mackinaw.
